Further News about Alignment

Hi all.
it is great to see your contributions and ideas and we would encourage everyone to continue to add your feedback even if it is very brief. Already we are considering your comments and will shortly feedback some ideas about how we can address your valid points.

Remember to go and check the comments link at the bottom of the post below and add your own comment if you haven't done so already . You could press both RSS feeds at the top right of the page so you get notice of new comments and posts. In that way you can keep up to date with what are people are adding.

Also just to keep you in the loop with where we are up to in the alignment process.
We are currently working on altering the existing Achievement Standards and the Unit standards that will remain in the new matrix and writing the new standards that are indicated in the Matrix.
One of the big changes will be detailed assessment conditions for all the standards which include guidance about good assessment practice, possible assessment contexts, authenticity, text selections and possible methods of collecting evidence. In line with NZQA's philosophy we will be suggesting different possible methods of assessment you could consider when assessing a standard.
This includes other ways in which you can collect evidence for achievement standards throughout a unit which is more closely aligned to the way unit standards have been assessed in the past.
We will also be adding in special notes which will break down the instructional words of the standards (eg explain, describe etc) to make it much clearer what these actually mean for you and the students
This will be complete by the end of February 2009. In March and April you will get the chance to formally feedback about these changes. This will be in the form of an online survey, plus regional cluster group meetings. Please Attend!!!
Cheers
Josephine and Deb

  1. Thanks for all your hard work on the behalf of Media Studies teachers all over the country. Comments on the proposed Matrix...
    - Level 1 Achievement Standards will be fantastic but it is good to see the retention of Unit Standards until ASs can be formed.
    - From looking at the proposed changes, it seems that the Level 2 and 3 courses are becoming very similiar. As a teacher, I appreciate the variety the current standards allow and enjoy looking at different aspects of the media at various Year levels.
    - I disagree with the proposed merge of 90277 and 90280. They are quite different in that one standard focuses on how meaning is created via media language and the other looks at how stories are constructed. In a sense, one is audience-response based, while the other demonstrates how a film/newspaper/etc. is built from the bones up (with the purpose of reaching an audience). It is beneficial for students to see it from both sides.
    - Also, what shape would the new assessment take seeing as it is worth 5 credits? This seems quite weighty.
    - I also disagree with the removal of 90282 as this standard assesses the mastery of a particular technology NOT the final product (which is a combination of technologies, and there is no need to be an expert at any to produce a decent product)as is assessed in 90765.
    - 90600 is a difficult standard, but it is the second part of the assessment that is the most difficult (ie: describe variant readings). The first part, where students examine the way a director creates meaning, is much more accessible and helps prepare students for the practical aspect of the course.
    - 90606 - is it really necessary for students to complete a written reflection of the process? Because planning, creating and editing a film is a lengthy process, the reflection occurs as they go. The key competencies are obvious within the finished product.
